On the Leader Generation podcast: why digital and AI pilots fail to scale

I joined Tessa Burg on Mod Op's Leader Generation podcast to talk about one of the biggest challenges facing organisations today: turning successful pilots into scalable business outcomes.

Key takeaways

  1. Digital and AI transformation isn't just about the tech. The tech is the part you can buy; what matters is the embedded capability and operational muscle you build.
  2. The organisational dichotomy of scale: resourcing is shifting back to local markets, producing more successful pilots, while global and regional teams have less resource to build capability across the organisation.
  3. Without capability embedded systemically, scaling a pilot is like buying 100 F1 cars without certified drivers and expecting to go faster.

1. The tech is the easy partIs digital and AI transformation really about the technology?

Digital and AI transformation isn't just about the tech. That's the easy part, the part you can buy. What matters is the embedded capability and operational muscle you build.

MNCs and enterprises have reached a point of inflection in digital and AI adoption. The real question now is how you scale a successful execution, like using CRM for consumer recruitment on WhatsApp in Delhi and Mumbai, or that one instance of AI synthetic audiences used to validate the most successful social campaign before it launched in Great Britain.

2. The organisational dichotomy of scaleWhat is the "organisational dichotomy of scale"?

The framing matters too. I call it the organisational dichotomy of scale.

On one hand, there's a fundamental shift back from centralised resourcing to local intimacy, putting executional focus in the markets. That means more successful pilots and more innovation.

Yet on the other, global and regional teams are left with less resource to orchestrate and to build capability that can be embedded systemically across the organisation.

3. Capability over pilotsWhy does capability matter more than the pilot?

Without building capability and embedding it systemically, it's as good as buying 100 F1 cars without certified drivers and expecting to go faster.
